⏱️30 minutes

Defensive Mindset

Great defense starts with trust...

Denial Defense

  • Use aggressive hand positioning on passing lanes
  • Make receivers work for every catch
  • Force lob passes that allow help defense time

Communication System

Defensive Calls

  • "Ice" - force ball handler to sideline on screens
  • "Switch" - exchange defensive assignments
  • "Help" - weak side defender provides support
  • "Recover" - return to original assignment
  • "Box out" - secure defensive rebounding position

Rebounding Philosophy

Every Player Rebounds

  • Guards must crash the boards on long shots
  • Forwards secure area rebounds and outlet quickly
  • Centers dominate the paint and start fast breaks

Boxing Out Fundamentals

  • Find and make contact with your assignment
  • Create space between opponent and basket
  • Pursue the ball with maximum effort

Situational Defenses

End-of-Clock Situations

  • Deny all three-point attempts
  • Force contested mid-range shots
  • Foul only if leading by 3+ points

Defending Inbound Plays

  • Pressure all receivers
  • Deny easy entry passes
  • Communicate switches on crossing patterns

Fast Break and Defensive Transition

  • Stop the ball at the three-point line
  • Protect against easy baskets first
  • Communicate numbered situations (2-on-1, 3-on-2)
